SF Street Style: Spring in the City

Spring is in the air! Meaning park fashion at its peak. It seems like half the city is migrating to Dolores Park these days for some serious chilling out a la music, friends, a few cold bevs and maybe some Bi-Rite ice cream thrown in there. Check out the fashionable friends we found paired up and trolling the streets in and around Dolores Park on a recent weekend day:

Spotted: Photographers on their way from work to park transition.

What is the best thing about spring in the city?

Jaz: My favorite part about spring is usually the rain…..I do enjoy bringing out the light and bright colors to wear.

Erica: The best part of spring is the variety. Sometimes I wear one thing, but it’s easy to layer, and I can wear all of my wardrobe.

Spotted: Heading to pick up burritos on 16th Street.

Allisonwears Lush studded-neck blouse, vintage skirt, Doc Marten boots.

Toni wears Calvin Klein shirt, Levi’s jeans, Chie Mahari shoes.

Spotted: 1970s & 1950s inspired looks trekking thru the masses en route to meet friends.

What is your favorite thing to do when it’s this hot?

Erin & Maura: We love to bring our dog to Dolores Park.

Style Equation: Less Spent at a Big Box = More for Indies (Sponsored)

[caption id=”attachment_16773” align=”aligncenter” width=”587” caption=”The easygoing spring and summer apparel of Alexis is available on PinkMascara, one of the many companies offering discounts through CouponCodes4U”]

[/caption]

Try as I might to shop independent as often as possible, there are often things I need that lead me to major retailers, among them things like running shoes or socks or cheap sunglasses that I can accidentally lose, break or scratch guilt-free. If I can spend less at a major chain store, then it often works out this way in my mind: oh, well that just means I have more to spend the next time I see some wonderfully fabulous creation by an independent designer in San Francisco.

I’m not saying, of course, that shopping is always an even sum game. Sure, sometimes I get a deal and what that savings actually goes to in reality is me buying groceries or paying for a babysitter or buying gas. But in the fantasyland of my mind, I usually think about the next indie item I’ve been coveting and how I may soon be able to check that off my list (and trust me, that list is long).

And so onto the sponsored part of this message. You knew it was coming. But it’s actually a sincere suggestion on my part: before shopping big box, why not scope out ways to save on your potential purchases? That way maybe you, too, will be able to check off something on your indie wish list. There are many ways to suss out deals these days, but one that’s super simple and easy to is quite old-fashioned: online coupons. Sure, the “c” word can sound like something people did with scissors and too much free time way back when, before the Internets. But these days, Free Coupon Codes are bringing plenty of shoppers welcome deals. The only trick, of course, is remembering to hunt them down before you buy. For example, should you be hunting for shoes, you’d do well to notice the Coupon Code for Shoebuy waiting on Couponcodes4u.com. There are several available at the moment, but one will net you 20 percent off and free shipping.

Think of it like building a shopping muscle. You probably already do research on different items at different retailers when you shop. You may even compare pricing and watch for items to go on sale. In the same way that you’ve trained yourself to bargain shop online or check flash sales or daily deal sites on a regular basis, you can develop that coupon-seeking muscle and kick it into gear before making a major purchase. On the same site, you’ll find a Coupon for Maurices, among many, many others offered by companies ranging from Southwest Airlines to Clarins. For clothes, many stores offer multiple discount coupons that you can use depending on what fits best with your purchase. If you’re looking for a free Pink Mascara Promo Code, for example, you’ll find that you can save 20 percent, opt for free shipping or get 10 percent off sale items.

Think of it as spending less on the must-haves so you can drop a little more on the can’t-live-withouts.

SF Fashion Events: Discarded to Divine, D.I.Y. Nail Night + More

Earth Day may be officially in the rear view, but don’t expect the San Francisco love for eco-friendly fashion to fade. In fact, this week puts the spotlight on earth-conscious apparel, thanks to the return of the annual Discarded to Divine gala and fashion show, where apparel and accessories made from cast-off clothing and textiles will be auctioned off to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco’s many life-altering programs for those in need. Along with D2D, Wells Fargo hosts Transformations: A Fashion Showcase, featuring evening wear designs made using Goodwill donations by City College designers in collaboration with Turning Heads at-risk youth. There’s also a grand re-opening for eco-friendly Noe Valley shop Loft 1513, a D.I.Y. nail night at Mira Mira, the latest Raw SF and many others.

We’re adding new fashion happenings all the time. Find details on these and other upcoming San Francisco fashion events waiting on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

7 Stylish Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in San Francisco

With Earth Day coming up this Sunday, you may find yourself focused on the environmental impact of your fashion habit. Behind whatever’s hanging in our closets, there are fields of pesticide-laden cotton, river-draining amounts of water and tons of buckets of dyes and bleaches involved in producing so much of today’s apparel. So how can a stylish Bay Area-ite satisfy her fashion cravings? Here are seven ways:

  1. Shop vintage. Need an excuse to buy that one-of-a-kind piece you spotted last weekend? Done: buying vintage is good for the environment. (Reuse!) Head over to Fiat Lux in the Castro for a drool-worthy collection of never-been-worn deadstock designer sunglasses or hurry to Ver Unica in Hayes Valley for that perfect vintage party dress. The planet thanks you.
  2. Feed your shoe addiction with Melissa Shoes, plastic (yes – plastic) shoes imported from Brazil. The whimsical footwear is made from 100 percent recyclable materials. There are several stores in San Fran selling the line. Try Nida boutique in Hayes Valley or an Ambiance location.
  3. Drape yourself with eco-friendly hardware. Saving the planet and wearing a few sparklers aren’t mutually exclusive. Designers are using reclaimed materials to make inspired, original jewelry. I had trouble resisting Alkemie’s hedgehog ring at Dress in the Marina, while rhinestone lovers can find Claire Hummel’s fabulous creations at Belljar in the Mission.
  4. Buy some new underwear. But not just any underwear – a pair that will get you off your butt, onto a bike and into a greener mode of transportation! Locally-owned and manufactured Pedal Panties make riding your bike more comfortable, so your eco-friendly bum can “feel as good as you look.”
  5. Order eco-friendly. If Internet shopping is your game, here are a few more players for your roster. Amour Vert’s clothes won’t hurt the planet or your well-honed fashion reputation. If you’ve got money to burn, try Dosa for some of the prettiest hippie-chic clothes out there. They’re available via Polyvore. And watch out for an upcoming online store from my personal favorite, Dipped & Dyed.
  6. Indulge yourself in a local shopping spree. Make your way over to one of Berkeley designer Erica Tanov’s nearby boutiques for some charmingly luxe environmentally-friendly duds.
  7. Stop using Salvation Army as a dumpster. Did you know that up to 85% of what you drop off at Salvation Army will end up in overseas black markets or be turned into rags and insulation? Why not make some money off your old clothes at places like Crossroads Trading Co., Buffalo Exchange or a local consignment shop? Even better for the world: find a charitable program like Reuse and Cleanup Days in Contra Costa County that will find willing takers for anything you want to toss.

The Convertible Scarf-Top-Shrug by Boditecture

Our obsession with convertible clothing runs deep. Not only do multi-way pieces give you more options, it’s just plain cool knowing your scarf-top-hood-shrug could also be a shrug-hood-top-scarf. So we were obviously enthused over the Scarf Hug by San Francisco label Boditecture.

Focusing on garments that can be worn in multiple ways, Boditecture sells a variety of convertible pieces, but this one stands out for offering 12 options that span casual daywear to nightlife-ier styles. Made of a loose wool knit and available in several colors, the $79 item can be wrapped around your neck as a scarf or fashioned into a variety of tops, a shrug, a hood and several looks that are somewhere in between.

You’ll find it online in the Boditecture online shop.

Rain, Boo. Let the Slick Umbrella Make it Better.

The only upside to a downpour? The potential for a cool umbrella to keep the drops at bay. Here’s one that not only satisfies the cute factor, but is also made of recycled plastic bottles by a local company that donates a portion of its proceeds to charitable organizations.

By Danville-based A Lot to Say, the Slick Umbrella, $70, is printed with an all-over message that promotes earth-friendly action through better care of our oceans and waterways.

The company also makes t-shirts, bags and totes, yoga accessories and items for the home - all from recycled plastic bottles and 100 percent sustainable, non-toxic materials.
